New Upper School Electives Provide New Opportunities

Enriching a

Christian High School Education

At Medina Christian Academy, we seek to provide a well-rounded education for our high school students that will prepare them for college studies and a future career. We believe this is an important aspect of a comprehensive private Christian education, which aims to help students grow academically and spiritually.

Our high school curriculum currently includes Advanced Placement (AP) and College Preparatory Plus (CCP) courses, in addition to a growing number of electives. Our elective study courses are designed to provide opportunities for students to prayerfully explore subjects they are passionate about and grow knowledge in an area of study they may go on to pursue in college.

The following are just a few of our new electives for the 2020–2021 school year.

Introduction to Photography

This course gives students an opportunity to learn both the science and art behind digital photography. Our students leave the course with a firm understanding of digital cameras and editing software and a general knowledge of the basic tools of photography, from light and flash to aperture and shutter speed.

Japanese Missions

One of our most unique electives, this course is a prayerful study of Japan—where Christianity is one of the nation’s minor religions—through the history of mission and introduction to the Japanese language. Less than one percent of the population in Japan claims Christian beliefs. This course seeks to examine culture in Japan and how Christian mission work makes a positive impact. In their studies, students will gain an understanding of simple conversational language, interpret and apply written skills, and critically analyze literature and poetry.

Introduction to Coding

This introductory computer programming course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the role computation can play in solving problems. Using the Python 3.5 programming language, students will learn the basics of coding. Through the course, they will become more confident in their ability to write small programs to accomplish useful goals. We are excited to give students this opportunity in a growing career field.

Music Theory

Students will be provided with the skills needed to read and write music notation as well as to understand, analyze, and listen informedly. The course covers a wide range of material including pitches and scales, intervals, clefs, rhythm, form, meter, phrases and cadences, and basic harmony. This study in music theory will provide a foundation for music that students will undoubtedly retain and utilize well beyond graduation.
